Ideas Log 1 Youth Culture

After reading through the brief and watching today’s session I came up with 3 ideas for the project.

Idea 1

Using an idea for game I would like to develop, I would create a multimedia project using concept art, rotoscoping and digital posters. The basic idea would be that I would create some concept art for characters, environments, etc. and then use some of this art in a variety of posters, For example I would display character art in film style posters with kinetic typography on the characters names or make animated elements and also animated posters to recreate sections from the game. This was just a basic idea but in it I could show off some of the skills from the previous terms, such as rotoscoping and animated posters, and also allow me to develop some existing skills which I want to take further into the second year, like games design and illustration.

Idea 3 and 4

Idea three and four were quite interlinked but involved different skills.

Idea 3 focused on the area I live in, Margate, and create a documentary film about the area and its history. The project would focus on interviews with local business owners and resident to develop a sense of what its like to live here and especially focus on people who have lived here their whole lives as these people have seen Margate change throughout the last 20 years. The reason I wanted to do this was because Margate’s history and its impact on how the area functions now are very interesting topics. The town used to be basically a holiday resort for the whole of Britain and eventually it fell out of fame which would eventually lead to lots of social housing where the hotels once were and now Margate is returning to a popular getaway for Londoners which has led to both a resurgence in art and culture but also means the area is becoming gentrified and is pushing those who live here out with the rising house prices. I find this concept of change and juxtaposition in the town very compelling and so I focused on it with my third idea as well.

In my final idea, I tried to think of another way to explore Margate while also doing what I most enjoyed from the previous projects and so I thought to create a magazine. This magazine would use the ideas I explored in my second idea in a visual format; documenting the different galleries and shops in Margate and also showing the more deprived areas in a realistic but also positive light. This magazine/photo collection would also use some text taken from the interviews and spoken elements form the documentary so if I were to select this idea to develop then I would have to do the second idea alongside it but this would allow me to create two different, connected projects simultaneously which would display both the skillsets from each project while demonstrating my ability to work professionally.

These ideas aren’t fully developed or explored and I am going to do research for these idea and talk about them with my tutors so I can select my project more carefully. Currently, though, my favourite idea would be to do idea two and three together.
